Payments and rails

Are SEPA Instant payments always instant?

No. SEPA Instant is designed for rapid euro payments, but instant processing is available only when the sending institution supports the scheme, the receiving institution supports the scheme, the payment meets applicable limits and eligibility requirements, and the service is operational at the time of the transfer. If any condition is not met, the payment is not processed instantly.

Why the receiving side matters

A scheme is a two-sided arrangement. Your account supporting SEPA Instant says nothing about whether the beneficiary's institution does. If it does not, the payment is not an instant payment, regardless of how it was initiated.

This is the most common reason a payment expected to arrive in seconds does not.

Planning around it

  • Do not promise a counterparty an instant arrival on the strength of the rail alone.
  • For a payment that must land by a deadline, allow for the possibility that it will follow standard processing.
  • Confirm with the beneficiary that their institution participates, if timing genuinely matters.
  • Remember that eligibility includes applicable limits: a payment above them is not processed as an instant one.

What else can delay a euro payment

Beyond scheme eligibility, a payment on any rail can be affected by incomplete or inconsistent payment information, compliance requirements, provider requirements and network rules. See Why can a payment be delayed or rejected?.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a limit on instant payments? Applicable limits and eligibility requirements apply, and your own transaction limits are stated in your offer.

Should we send it again? Not until you know whether the first payment will complete or return.

This article is explanatory. Scheme rules and the applicable agreements prevail if they differ from it.
